Special Topic: Intern Stephanie- Marmosets and Tamarins:
Chapter 13- Feeding ecology and behaviour of the genus Saguinus

Here at the sanctuary we have two types of Tamarins: 18 Cotton-Top Tamarins  (S. oedipus) and one Saddleback Tamarin (S. fuscicollis). In both species, their small body sizes require high energy and high quality foods. To help keep them healthy and happy we have created a special diet that reflects what they eat in the wild. There are four primary components of the Tamarin diet: insects, ripe fruits, plant exudates, and nectars.

Insectivory: Based on several field studies, 30-77 per cent of a Tamarin’s feeding and foraging time is spent focused on insects. They are high in protein, which is essential to their diet. The marmoset diet, eggs and nuts we feed them are used to replace most of the needed protein, but on occasion, you can find the Tamarins hunting insects in their enclosures.

Ripe Fruits and Nectars: A high-energy resource, ripe fruits and nectars make up 30-70 per cent of a Tamarin’s feeding time. Unlike the variety seen in insect foraging, all species of Tamarins show a similar pattern in finding and feeding on ripe fruits. They typically eat fruits
with single or very few large seeds (drupes and arillates, respectively). While eating fruits in the wild, like many primates,
Tamarins aid in seed dispersal. The success of a seed that is carried and fertilized by primates is much higher compared to just fallen seeds.

Nectars are consumed primarily during the dry season, when ripe fruits are limited. Our Tamarins are provided with browse and enrichment that provides them with nectar. They also receive the needed nutrients found in nectar through the Marmoset diet.

Exudates (Gums): Gums have been reported to make up 58 per cent of Saddleback Tamarins’ diet during the dry season in northeastern Peru. There is little known about the gums of various trees, but is believed that they are high in calcium, which a vitamin that is lacking in other parts of the Tamarin diet.

Due to their focus on specific tree and insect species, Tamarins have ranging patterns that are varied and can spread to several different food patches. This specific diet leads to the need for resources defense. The importance of protecting a food resource is closely intertwined with the importance of exploiting that same resource, which is occasionally seen in some of our paired Tamarins.

Spider monkey conservation in the twenty-first century: recognizing risks and opportunities

Several factors contribute to the distribution of spider monkeys throughout Central and South America. The range of spider monkeys occurs from southeastern Mexico to the southern Amazonian rainforest of central Bolivia and western Brazil. The amounts of habitat available and environmental catastrophes within these areas are the most influential factors affecting spider monkey populations today.

The habitats of spider monkeys are being degraded due to vegetation disturbance caused by selective logging and the clearing of land for agricultural expansion. When deforestation occurs in a small area, even if only a few of the trees in that area are cut down, it has a tremendous impact on the species living in that area. The aerial pathways that spider monkeys high up in the canopy were once able to utilize disappear and with less ability to move populations of spider monkeys become isolated in these small areas. This isolation creates a crowding effect in which resources, such as ripe fruit, decrease rapidly.

Agricultural expansion can cause the same problems as logging but there are also methods through which this type of disturbance can be temporary and even benefit the species living in the area. Slash and burn agriculture, seen in the Yucatan peninsula, is one example of sustainable agriculture. Areas of land are used for 2-3 years and then left alone for a minimum of 30 years. This allows spider monkeys to continue to use the land for movement between habitats and also provides them with areas of forest that are in different stages of growth, which means a wider variety of food to select from.

The species of spider monkey at Pacific Primate Sanctuary Ateles geoffroyi is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, Red List of Threatened Species.  Most spider monkey species are considered endangered or critically endangered with one member, the brown spider monkey, holding a place on the World’s 25 Most Endangered Primate List. Survival of spider monkey species depends heavily on the humans who share their habitat. Protecting large areas of forest and sustainable agriculture are just a couple of ways to help conserve the spider monkey species.

Definition of Antibiotics

Antibiotics are a subgroup of anti-infectives that are derived from bacterial sources and are used to treat bacterial infections.  Other classes of drugs, most notably the sulfonamides (synthetic antimicrobial agents), may be effective anti-bacterials.  Similarly, some antibiotics may have secondary uses.  The primary purpose of antibiotics is for treatment or prevention of bacterial infection. 

There are several classification schemes for antibiotics.  They can be based on bacterial spectrum: broad vs. narrow, route of administration: injectable vs. oral vs. topical, or type of activity: bactericidal (kills bacteria) vs. bacteriostatic (inhibits bacteria).  The most useful classification is based on chemical structure.  Antibiotics within a structural class will generally show similar patterns of effectiveness, toxicity, and allergic potential.  This chemical structure is used to determine what type of bacteria the antibiotics will be effective against. 


The following table is a summary of the classes of antibiotics and their properties, including their biological sources.

Side Effects
All antibiotics cause risk of overgrowth by non-susceptible bacteria.  Each drug carries a different degree of risk.  It is not recommended that nursing females take antibiotics as it risks alteration of the infant’s intestinal flora, and also runs the risk of masking infection in the infant.  Excessive or inappropriate use may promote growth of resistant pathogens.

Recommended Usage
Antibiotics should only be used in cases where there is either a known or a reasonable presumption of bacterial infection.  Certain bacteria can become resistant to individual antibiotics if they are overused.  A course of antibiotics should always be completed to reduce the risk of the bacteria becoming strain resistant.  Also if a course is not completed the antibiotics may not work against the infection and may no longer be effective if treatment is retried.

PPS PRIMATES in the SPOTLIGHT

Meet Miracle
On April 14, 1991 a beautiful baby capuchin monkey was born.  Her mother, Miranda, was captured in the wild as a young monkey.  She was taken from her family, and the only life she had ever known, suffering in filth at an animal dealer, and then shipped off to an entrepreneur in Hawaii.  When the tourist attraction, where she was going to be displayed, failed, Miranda found herself isolated in a tiny crate, with no space to move or stand up.  The extreme distress, brought on by this suffering, caused her to self mutilate. Fortunately, we were able to rescue Miranda.  When she arrived she was traumatized, terrified, emaciated, and had pulled all of the fur from her arms, legs and tail.  Here, Miranda finally received the compassionate care she deserved, and was given the opportunity to heal mentally and physically.  We gave refuge to two other monkeys from the same tourist attraction, which gave Miranda the companionship she so sorely needed.  She was able to develop a relationship with a male and form a social group. Miranda’s story is one of strength, beauty and hope; it was truly miraculous that she was able to recover enough to become a successful, nurturing mother, which is why we named her baby Miracle.
Miracle is now 21 years old, and has spent all of her life at Pacific Primate Sanctuary, never having to endure the pain and suffering that her parents had to go through.  She enjoys each day: exploring the green plants and large branches in her outdoor enclosure. She is able to live socially, and has had the advantage of growing up in a family group. We provide her with delicious fruits and vegetables each day, often thinking of creative ways to encourage her to work for her food (see Monkey Foraging Boxes on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/pacificprimate). 
Miracle is very intelligent, and likes being challenged.  She especially enjoys doing Positive Reinforcement Training with her caregivers.  Miracle has learned how to touch a target, and present her hand and foot for examination!

SANCTUARY NEWS

Guido and Consuelo
Black-tufted eared marmosets, Guido and Consuelo,
were each left alone when their partners passed away.
As a part of their Colony Management training, PPS Interns examine the past history and behaviors of the monkeys, and make recommendations for pairing and placement based on this information.  Since Guido and Consuelo were solitary and in need of companionship, Interns Linda, Annabel and Mary suggested that they would make an excellent pair. 
We placed Consuelo in front of Guido’s enclosure for several days, and we immediately began to see positive signs- including tracking (following one another) and eating calmly near one another.  After observing for a couple weeks, and not seeing negative behaviors, we decided to give them a chance to share an enclosure.  So far, this pairing seems to be a great success!  They are contentedly sharing a nestbox, eating side-by-side, and exploring their new space.

Charlene and John have been an integral part of the Sanctuary Team.  Unfortunately, due to work schedules, they are unable to continue their weekly volunteering.  Charlene donated her time as an Animal Caretaker, while John has contributed his skills as a handyman. Charlene approached every task with efficiency, pride, and compassion.  She would often bring in special treats for the monkeys, and mastered food preparation quickly- ensuring each animal on a special diet got exactly what they needed.  Charlene always went beyond what was required, and accomplished many tasks every time she was at the Sanctuary. John first became involved with PPS when he saw Viola Paints on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIlItld7W94&feature=plcp), and he fell in love with little Viola. Shortly after that, he joined Charlene in Volunteering.  Throughout his time here, John has helped out in so many ways- repairing weak wire in the enclosures, making new catch crates, building large double portables, and installing a bamboo wind break around the spider monkey enclosures, just to name a few.  John has generously offered to remain on-call, to help out when needed.  We will feel Charlene and John’s absence, their creativity, generous selfless service, and loving-kindness towards the PPS Family- both the monkeys and their caregivers

It's so hard to believe how quickly time goes by, I have been volunteering for over a year already!  It has been an experience that I would recommend for all the people I come across in life.  Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity!

I wish, and I will speak for John as well in wishing only the best for the entire Ohana at PPS, and the non-human primates as well.  A piece of our hearts will always be in attendance at that wonderful sanctuary!!

PPS Internship

Farewell Intern Linda
Intern Linda has completed her Internship and is now off to Vet School.  Her presence here at the Sanctuary has such been a blessing.  Each day, she brought joy into the Sanctuary (to both the monkeys and other Volunteers) with her positive attitude and bright smile.  Linda has an openness that is truly rare. She has the ability to see many different points of view and share her perspective with others, as well as a willingness to explore and implement new ideas that are presented to her.  This capability makes Linda a remarkable caregiver, because she is able to adjust and adapt easily in any situation.  During her internship, Linda has honed her observational skills, and has gotten to know each monkey intimately.  She can easily identify every individual, and is able to tell when an animal is getting sick long before the situation becomes critical.  She has created new Sanctuary protocol, made major revisions to the Current list of Primates with Descriptions, Detailed Descriptions of the Primates at PPS the Quick Reference Guide to the Primates, and has passed her knowledge on to Interns Annabel and Mary as well.  Her contributions will remain with us and be built upon in the future.  Linda has endeared herself to all of us, and will be greatly missed. She will always be a part of the Sanctuary Family.

Farewell Linda, we wish you all the best in your endeavors, and know that you will succeed in all that you do. Your light shines brightly, and you have the power to make a positive difference in this world!

Before I arrived at PPS, my goals for the internship were to gain experience, meet others, and to challenge myself. Now after almost 10 months I can be confident in saying that I’ve achieved all my goals. I’ve gained experience working with the most amazing monkeys! From feeding and cleaning to customized care in the infirmary to bringing monkeys back to good health; these are experiences that will stay with me for a lifetime. I’ve met people that have become lifetime friends. At the sanctuary we’ve laughed, cried, and have shared countless memories together….

Welcome Intern Stephanie 
We have happily welcomed Stephanie as our newest PPS Intern! Stephanie is being trained in all the aspects of New World primate care by Interns Annabel and Mary and COO Erin. They are sharing their experience, expertise, and teaching her everything they know.
During this first Training Module, Stephanie is learning how to prepare the monkeys diets, administer medications, clean, prune, and outfit the enclosures, and maintain the Sanctuary facility.  With her extraordinary observational skills, she is already able to identify many of the monkeys. Stephanie has already mastered food preparation and dispensing the appropriate medications. It is a joy to watch as she becomes proficient in each task- gaining the skills she needs to one day, perhaps, become certified as a Primary Animal Caregiver.

When she learned of her acceptance as a PPS Intern, Stephanie wrote:
I am honored to accept your offer to join the Pacific Primate Sanctuary as a Resident Intern from June 2012 to June 2013.

My love for primates and my belief that they should all have somewhere to feel safe are my main motivations for joining the sanctuary. I hope that by the end of my year as an intern I will have gained experience in caregiving, knowledge about New World primates, as well as see the individual personalities of all the primates at the sanctuary. I am truly looking forward to working among others who have a dedication to the well being of animals.

Spider Monkeys: Demography and group composition of Ateles 

The distribution of spider monkeys ranges from Central to South America. The size, density, and composition of spider monkey groups differ greatly throughout this range and throughout the Ateles species. Eighteen groups, of four different Ateles species, were observed in a study and showed a wide variety of group sizes. The size of these groups ranged from fifteen to fifty-six individuals with a varying numbers of females to males, infants, adults, and juveniles.

 These drastic variations are caused by several factors. Accidental injuries, such as falling out of a tree, predation, and aggression by conspecifics all play a role. However, the main factor that creates variation among Ateles species is habitat. Habitat disturbance, such as deforestation, impacts that habitat’s carrying capacity. If a habitat cannot support over fifty spider monkeys in one area it makes sense that the size of a spider monkey groups found in that area is going to be smaller.

Black-handed spider monkeys, Ateles geoffroyi, the species here at Pacific Primate Sanctuary have been shown to form medium sized groups, with an occasional larger group. When larger groups are formed there are typically more females in the group than males and it is very common to see subgroups made up entirely of adult males. A geoffroyi groups typically consist of more juveniles and infants than groups of other spider monkey species. The reason for this is not clear but one main cause may be due to the fragmentation of the forest where this species is located in Central America. Fragmented forests cause predator communities to be more widely distributed, which means that not as many predators are found together in one area of forest. This gives the spider monkeys a better chance of avoiding predators, and in turn, increases the survival of infants and juveniles. Since younger monkeys are more vulnerable, they are usually the first animals taken by predators. It is important that many young of this species survive, as Black-handed Spider monkeys are currently listed as an Endangered Species.

Defining and Identifying Bacteria 

The monkeys at PPS occasionally develop bacterial infections that need to be treated with a course of antibiotics. Different antibiotics are used to treat different types of bacteria and infections. It is important to know which type of antibiotics to use when treating the monkeys in order to ensure they have a speedy recovery, we can determine this best by understanding the different forms of bacteria.

Definition of Bacteria 
Bacteria are microscopic single-celled organisms. They possess a prokaryotic type of cell structure, which means that their cells are non–compartmentalized, and their DNA (usually circular) can be found throughout the cytoplasm rather then within a membrane bound nucleus. They reproduce through fission (splitting) or by forming spores. Bacteria are present in most habitats on Earth, growing in soil, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, water, and deep in the Earth’s crust, as well as in organic matter and the live bodies of plants and animals. There are typically 40 million bacterial cells in a gram of soil and a million bacterial cells in a milliliter of fresh water. There are approximately five nonillion (5 followed by 30 zeros!) bacteria on Earth, forming a biomass that exceeds that of all plants and animals.

Bacteria are vital in recycling nutrients, with many steps in the nutrient cycle depending on these organisms. The vast majority of the bacteria in the body are rendered harmless by the protective effects of the immune system, and a few are beneficial. However, a few species of bacteria are pathogenic and cause infectious diseases, including cholera, syphilis, anthrax, leprosy, and bubonic plague. The most common fatal bacterial diseases are respiratory infections, with tuberculosis alone killing about 2 million people a year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. In developed countries, antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and in agriculture, so antibiotic resistance is becoming common. In industry, bacteria are important in sewage treatment and the breakdown of oil spills, the production of cheese and yogurt through fermentation, the recovery of gold, palladium, copper and other metals in the mining sector as well as in biotechnology, and the manufacture of antibiotics and other chemicals.

 Differences in Bacteria
Bacteria may be classified based on their shape. Different antibiotics are be used to treat different shaped bacteria.
 The different bacteria shapes are:
➢ Spherical (cocci)
➢ Rod-like (bacilli)
➢ Spiral (spirochetes)
➢ Comma Shaped (vibrios)

Bacteria can also be classified as either gram positive or gram negative, aerobic or anaerobic, autotrophic or heterotrophic.

 Aerobic bacteria use oxygen for metabolism. Oxygen can actually be rather toxic, and for a cell to be able to use molecular oxygen, it must be able to manufacture specific enzymes that detoxify oxygen waste products. Anaerobic bacteria are able to live without oxygen, they either do not have the enzymes required to detoxify oxygen waste, or are not able to make enough of these enzymes to be able to live at normal levels of atmospheric oxygen.

Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are defined based on how the bacteria reacts to a gram stain. If it takes the initial stain it will be purple in color and will be considered gram positive. If it does not take the initial stain, it will be pink in color and will be considered gram negative. The difference is in the outer casing of the bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria have a thick layer of peptidoglycan (a sugar protein shell) that the stain can penetrate. Gram-negative bacteria have an outer membrane covering a thin layer of peptidoglycan on the outside. The outer membrane prevents the initial stain from penetrating.

Most autotrophic bacteria can synthesize their food from substances like hydrogen sulphide. This process is called chemosynthesis and involves the use of chemical substances for the production of energy. Heterotrophic bacteria, in contrast, cannot synthesize their own energy and must consume organic matter for energy. These include decomposing bacteria, or other groups of bacteria that may be symbiotic or parasitic in nature.

By understanding, and being able to classify bacteria types, we are one step closer to knowing how best to treat any infections that may occur. Next month, we will explore the different types of antibiotics, and what they treat.

Special Topic: Intern Linda 
 Marmosets and Tamarins Chapter 12: Habitats, Feeding Ecology, and Home Range Size in the Genus Callithrix 

 Here at the sanctuary we have three different species of the genus Callithrix. They are white-tufted eared marmosets (C. jacchus), black-tufted eared marmosets(C. penicillata), and Weid’s marmosets (C. kuhlii). In the wild they all occupy different niches, but exhibit similarity in their diets.

White-tufted eared marmosets (C. jacchus) live in the riverine (located on or inhabiting the banks of a river) forests of Northeast Brazil and North Atlantic coast. Black tufted eared marmosets (C. penicillata) live in a more seasonal environment, in forest patches and savanna forests of central Brazil. Weid’s marmsoets (C. Kuhlii) live in the Atlantic forest regions of Bahia (east Brazil).

 The feeding ecology of Calithrix allows for them to have quite small home ranges compared to other New World primates. Being gummivores (gum/exudate eaters) provides them with plenty of food at nearby trees. Marmosets have specialized teeth designed for gouging into trees, which draws the gums to the surface. A single tree can provide food for many individuals. There is not much fruit in the diet of white-tufted eared marmosets or black-tufted eared marmosets in wild populations. However when they do eat fruit, they use edge and secondary forest depending on fruit types and fruiting patterns. When faced with shortages of fruit, Callithrix monkeys have the ability to exploit gums and forage for insects and other animal prey.
